A Message From Gary

I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

@loaferman: Sir, you are a Southern brother. Facts: cnn interview with rossington; disgusting. Charlie daniels sings of 'old glory' (yankee rag); allman brothers sing 'southern man' where niel young lies about the South. Brad Paisley (excuse me, pansy) sings with llcoolj (the crapper) on 'accidental racist' where they disrespect our Southern women; get your barf bag.
The only band I know that uphold the battle flag are Marshall Tucker band.
I can hear that glorious rebel yell even now

Been a Skynyrd fan since the days of 8 track tapes. I hate that the band backtracked. They used the flag when it was advantageous and nothing new happened about the "KKK" or "skinheads" between that time.
Now that it seems more financially advantageous to abandon the flag they do so, then half-ass it because they want it both ways.
I won't buy any more of their albums until the put the flag back front and center and quit trying to half hide it if they use it at all.
They played about 90 miles from my home a few weeks ago and I did not go because I remember the fiasco over the flag.
They should have kept the flag and kept their mouths shut. Us old fans want it as part of Skynyrd and why do I see Skynyrd coffee mugs in Walmart with the flag design now? Because it makes a buck. Make up your minds.

@treblejunkie: keep telling the truth. Let's see how many Southerners are really out there. So far no response from the so called rock stars; nor will there be

@Walk In My Shadow: you said 'it was because of that war fought over slavery' and you call yourself a Southerner? when you get it right then we can talk. Good luck to you son

Fair enough!

You have quite the view of all this---amidst all your piety, remember the Southern Baptist sect(of which I was raised) was basically founded to allow southerners to feel theologically justified in their support of slavery---nothing more, nothing less.

I SERIOUSLY doubt that either your own Southern roots run any deeper(or even as deep) as my own family--- for what that is worth--- or that your connection to LS has as much provenance as my own---- they were contemporaries of mine in the late 60s in Duval County, and as a musician the first band I ever played with was Skynyrd, when we were quite young lads.

You be one of those Christians who want to apologize and justify a slave state?? Well, that's alright for you. I can be a southerner who is proud of the fact my region is indeed the eternal mystic heart of American music, without beating a bible in the name of a civil war that ruined the South and put us in a depression that didn't end until WW2. WHY do you think that, in the time when European immigration was at it's greatest clip to the USA(yes, after the Civil War), those people for the most part went anywhere BUT the South?? It was because of that war fought over slavery, a war that beggared our ancestors, more than decimated the flower of our man-hood, and helped to create the then-justifiable image of the South as a backwards, no-opportunity, plague-ridden area that resulted in those immigrants prefer the empty prairies of the nation. Think about it, as you beat your little drum over the 'glory' of a war that perhaps indeed was proof of the biblical truth 'the seeds of corruption bear bitter fruit.' Consider the above, and if you indeed believe God's Judgement, what then was his in that war?? Pull down thy vanity, I say...

@bipblake: good news blake: the u s flag, the yipes and stripes, is a pagan flag. The flag today means nothing that it did in 1776. Christian men then created the flag for a Christian nation. Today it has become pagan. The Confederate flag is a Christian flag; the St Andrews Cross represents a Christian nation, the Cross of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. How do you like the state of the 50 states today? Can you hear me okay? I didn't think so.

celtic53 // November 12, 2013 2:50:55 AM UTC

@treblejunkie: you remember Cassie Gaines, that wonderful Confederate lady? what fires the Southern heart is the defence of our beautiful Christian women and babies. We defend today (like our Confederate MEN did) at all costs. What our boys taught us in the War is to never consider ourselves from being outnumbered. good news: rossington, g allman , c daniels keep glorifying the yankee yipes and stripes.

celtic53 // November 11, 2013 3:13:27 AM UTC

@treblejunkie: confederateguton in 2012 said it best: rossington and lsb have sold out to the yankee dollar. Rossington's explanation of the cnn interview is repugnant to any Southerner (see above). FACT: Charlie daniels (from North Carloina) band sing of the 'old glory' of the yipes and stripes. allman brothers band now sing in their concerts 'Southern Man' written by the Canadian neil young accusing the South of racism; again, abb have sold out. The only Southern band I know that have not sold out are our boys from South Carolina; Marshall Tucker Band. Compromise is the language of the devil.

Its time for people to move on & get over this flag thing. If you really look at the confederate flag, you will notice that it has the same thing the American flag does.It has stars, stripes, & it even has the same colors.Red, white, & blue. Its just a different design is all.Now if certain people wanna use this flag as a symbol for hate, then that just goes to show that there are certain people who are retarded & who needs to get a life & grow up a little.Besides, I go to see Skynyrd for the music & for the love I have for these great group of fellers & gals. And just remember 2 things, 1) there's nothing wrong with being proud of your roots & where ya came from. And 2) Don't blame or try & tie in, something that happened (Civil War) long before anyone in this band was even alive. They were not even born when the Civil War took place. So to try & blame them cos of the flag is just plain stupid.America has come a long way since then. Its time to stop living in the past, & stop bitching over something as silly as a flag.Just enjoy the music. That's what I'm gonna do.And if any of ya,s are smart, you will to.Life's to short to bitch about this flag thing.Get over it, & move on & stop living in the past.Just enjoy the music. P.S. Also R.I.P. To Billy, Ean, Hughie & all of those who we lost & are now in Rock N Roll Heaven.By the way, if anyone in the band should happen to read this, after Billy passed away, I bought myself a grand piano & am self teaching myself how to play.Billy "Magic Fingers" Powell was simply the best.Mr.Keys is a great one to.Just enjoy the music Skynyrd Nation.
