'GIVING THANKS' - RONNIE VAN ZANT'S POETRY

Below is another runner-up's entry from our previous contest of "Giving Thanks Through the Songs of Skynyrd". This time, Skynyrd Nation member ldstamper shared his story about how his interpretation of "Gimme Back My Bullets" would become prophetic during times of his life. Thanks ldstamper!
Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Gimme Back My Bullets" (1976)

"Like everyone else, I identify with so many Skynyrd songs. The one that represents my life's experience in lyrics is "Gimme Back My Bullets." Not because of the record industry or a song going up the charts, but rather the lyrics: "...been up and down since I turned seventeen...I've been on top and then it seems I lost my dream..." These words would prove prophetic for my life.
The night I graduated from RE Lee High School in Jax on June 5, 1977 at age 17, I packed what little stuff I had in my sister's Toyota Corolla and we headed off to Lake City. I was striking out on my own and would wait tables at Howard Johnson's till I could get back to Bama (born and raised) in the fall.
August 1977, I made my way to Tuscaloosa and enrolled at the University of Alabama. Working my way through college often times without food, books, I faced each challenge, overcome each obstacle from what later was revealed to me through God's grace.
Through my toils, it's been the force of heart-pounding guitar-riveting rock and celestial piano intertwined with the bittersweet brilliance of Ronnie Van Zant’s poetry that has seen me through. One of God's greatest gifts is music and I thank Him that Skynyrd members and their families have persevered for which my life has been greatly enriched. "...I got it back, I'm feelin better every day..."
On Thanksgiving day, I shared food with my adopted family as well as my own kin. No matter how small the gesture, we have so that we may give.
