@Saturday Night Special: That's because it's not Ronnie singing. If I recall correctly some of the tracks on First and Last were sung by Ricky Medlocke or Ed King

that is a great song and your right it is a different sound because it isn't ronnie singing. that is the only time that rickey medlocke sang on a skynyrd song and played drums! yes he played the drums on that one

White Dove sounds different from any Skynyrd song I've ever heard. Still a good song and I've never heard a Skynyrd song yet I did'nt like!
