A Message From Gary

I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

-Gary Rossington

@DennisR: ,
I AM from the south and that flag means the same things to me as it does to you." Slavery, Jim Crow, lynching of blacks, denying citizens the right to vote, domestic terrorism and racist southern traitors."

People who try to pretend different are full of it.

@MicGivens: ,

I'm amazed at the delusion in your post and in so many others as well. The Civil War was fought over slavery, period. All of the revisionist myth and delusion can't change that. It's the most shameful period in American history and nothing to be proud of. Your ancestors fought for the wrong side, same as the Nazis did. You can b.s. yourself and maybe some more of the willfully deluded but the truth is what it is , the South fought to keep men and women enslaved. States rights, my a$$ . Even today the South remains a hotbed of racism, ignorance, and stupidity. I'm born and bred in the South and it's you clowns with your traitors flags are an embarrassment to the rest of us. Deep down inside ,where you keep your innermost secrets ,you know that I'm right and that you like that flag because there's at least some racism alive in you.

As a proud Skynyrd fan, I applaud you on your brave decision to not display the confederate flag. Symbolism does not travel in just one direction. You recognize that you can both be proud of your southern heritage and still not display what is a symbol of slavery and oppression to so many. By doing so, you separate from the hate groups who wave that flag for those evil purposes. You see that flag is not the be all end all. Flags don't write great songs, but you and Ronnie and the others did. I continue to honor that. Even if you are pressured to start using that flag again, because principles alone don't put food on the table, I do personally accept and appreciate the above explanation you have provided. Rock on!

Gary, what would lacy say about all of this I remember seeing him in a confederate kepi and uniform some where, I know what my gg grandfather who lost his right leg and spilled his blood at Gettysburg would say, honor the truth of our southern heritage, preach the truth at all your concerts, join the sons of confederate veterans, fly our confederate flag with pride at all your concerts and teach the true meaning of it to the crowds, don't let the haters both black and white take that away from southerners we have had so much taken from us during and after that war, basically our pride in the flag and our heroes is all we have. sic semper tyrannis god bless yall hope yall take my advice

From sugar to shit, shit to sugar as Mama used to say. The spin meisters/media talkers/feather dusters to the crazies that dwell at the bottom therin lies a fever swamp of strange developments.

The Confederate Flag is very important to all sorts people for very different reasons. The Confedrate Flag will forever remain one of the most powerful images in American History. It sparks for much valiant, curious discussion. This is a privilege of freedom.

With my morsel of thought I believe America is still numerous times better off than any place in the world. (Especially in the South)

I saw, listened and gathered no denouncing of The Stars and Bars. I see them at every Lynyrd Skynyrd concert and expect I will see them again.

Thank you for the thought-provoking forum. Most of all thank you, Lynyrd Skynyrd for your music and keeping the Light on.

Safe travels...

Lynyrd Skynyrd will always be an amazing band.

I APPLAUD you for standing up against racism and bigotry.

We are the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Red, white, and blue, that's what America has stood for, UNITED, for hundreds of years. Any pussy-whining waste of life who refuses to listen to your music because of your stance against racism needs to re-evaluate what an American means.

I'm proud to have played your music in the jukebox last night. And I will sacrifice that last beer for the night making sure the rest of the bar knows you will forever be a legend.

The band wants the southern flag there, Just not as a back drop, I can see why. I'm asked weekly "are they rascists" they are not, I have a rebel flag on my truck and I'm asked, Hell, I have a neice and nephew that are half and half and I love them and would kill for them. So I understand their decision, it doesn't change the music and the message, if it does for you, to bad, life ain't fair. They want to be an American Band, gee that sounded like a Ronnie quote.

bluenose // September 23, 2012 1:35:25 PM UTC

Lynyrd Skynyrd is not using the southern flag as the big back drop behind the drummer anymore, they'll still use the flag on stage. Ronnie Van Zant wasn't the one who wanted the flag in their concert, it was the manager. Point is, why not blame the KKK, white power, hate groups or as I call 'em homeland terrorists, for hijacking this beloved flag. Because they are the ONES who gave this flag a bad name in the first place. To bad we couldn't take it from their hands.

Harold James Malcolm

I'm A Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, new and old and will NEVER change. I'm not weak minded and will NOT change my feelings towards this Band. I have the Rebel Flag on my truck, it is not comming off, cause I'm not a racist. But people always ask me, is Lynyrd Skynyrd a rascist band. I say they are the American Rolling Stones with Southern soul, therefore the Rebel flag.Just watch Live At Freedom Hall, remember Ronnie strived for perfection and Ronnie's blood is pumping through Johnny's veins, Gary was an orginal member. Ricky filled in for drums on Skynyrd's first or second albumn. NO ONE can tell me their not Skynyrd! Johnny's Freebird is beyond aswesome, Ronnie would love it, pure energy and perfection! LYNYRD SKYNRYD LIVES, nuff said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
