A Message From Gary

I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

Anyone who thinks that slavery had nothing to do with the War for Southern Independence is wrong, but anyone who thinks slavery had everything to do with the war is just as wrong. It was a very complicated civic affair. Statistically, almost 9 out of 10 Southerners owned no slaves at all and the vast majority of the slaves were owned by the wealthiest 6% of society. Free blacks were some of the largest slaveholders in the South. Then there were the 5 Union states and the Federal capitol that had legal slavery.

I am descended from 24 Confederates and 1 Union soldier who died in Andersonville. None of them were slaveholders. One entered politics after the war and fought for equal rights for blacks.

To say that it was all over slavery completely ignores the tariffs that Southerners payed that increased their cost of living. It completely ignores the trade differences. It completely ignores the political differences between the 2 sections.

The Confederate flag is NOT a symbol of racism or oppression and it was never intended to be one. Just because a few sheetheads abused that flag does not make it a racist flag. The sheetheads also abuse the US flag. Does that make it a symbol of racism? NO!

Anyone who flies that flag for Southern pride and heritage has my admiration. Anyone who sees that flag as nothing but a symbol of racism is ignorant and calls for its removal has my contempt.

@DennisR: as for my statement it is of fact, no I do not honor john wilkes booth as he was an assassin, but then again how about your heroe Lincoln he was the reason for the war in the first place, he would rather bathe this country in blood for 4 years than come up with a reasonable peaceful solution, all because he was afraid of losing all the tax dollars from the wealthiest part of the nation at that time, yes, dennis the south... and slavery did not matter a bit to him, more facts. saying the south fought for slavery is like saying napolean invaded other countrys to impose the metric system,

@ dennisR @pnut901 first off Dennis it is a southern thang and you WOULD not understand, mr pnut901 you apparently only read the history books the north let you read in history class or you would know slavery existed in this country 90 years under the US flag before it ever existed under the confederate flag (only 4 years) the war was not to free the slaves, that was only an after thought as the emancipation proclamation did not free a damn negro, not one, so before you make ignorant statements about our southern heritage and compare us to NAZI germany, omg blacks flourished under slavery, the only place in the world while under that institution that they did so, my ancestors never put anyone in ovens, get your facts straight before you attack our heritage bo

Amigo, a bandeira é marca registrada da banda. Logo não vejo nada de mal em ser usada. Lynyrda Skynyrd é o melhor

It's a flag, not a label ..which seems to be what people try to do these days..label other people racist because of a can try to label someone racist but it doesn't mean it's true ..I got into Southern Rock in the late 70's/early 80's and it was always "The Rebel Flag" to me. BTW, which is how this country got started a bunch of REBELS!
