A Message From Gary

I wanted to clarify the discussion of the Confederate Flag in our recent CNN interview. Myself, the past members and the present members (that are from the South), are all extremely proud of our heritage and being from the South. We know what the Dixie flag represents and its heritage; the Civil War was fought over States rights.
We still utilize the Confederate (Rebel) flag on stage every night in our shows, we are and always will be a Southern American Rock band, first and foremost. We also utilize the state flag of Alabama and the American flag as well, ‘cause at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I only stated my opinion that the confederate flag, at times, was unfairly being used as a symbol by various hate groups, which is something that we don’t support the flag being used for. The Confederate flag means something more to us, Heritage not Hate…

Well put Gary!! Born and raised in Virginia I have seen this debate from every faction of the population, but you are right in that it is our Heritage and the Civil War (War of Northern Aggression) was about states rights! Well that and money but that is a whole other debate! lol

@treblejunkie: So true. As the old saying goes, people are making a mountain out of a molehill.Speaking for just myself, its like I keep saying, your not to blame on what part of the U.S. you were born from, cos you wasn't alive prior to when your mom gave birth to ya.That said, is it your fault if you was born in the south? Hell no.That said, why should you then be blamed of where you came from? And further more, just cos that IS where you came from, what? Your not allowed to be proud of where ya came from just cos of something that happened even before your parents were born much less you yourself? People had best get a reality check & stop casting blame on the innocent.People wanna blame anyone over a flag or the Civil War they may wanna start with those who were responsible. But that may be just a tad bit hard seeings how there all DEAD!!! Its time to close the chapter on that issue, stop trying to cast blame & move on people.Myself, that's what I choose to do, & that's all I got to say about that. Its like I said, I go to see Skynyrd for the music & the love I have for those fellers N gals & all the tragedies they have been through over the years. And there were a lot of em.But bless there hearts they keep going on for us TRUE fans. And they continue to make new music to,So its not like there making there living off of the old stuff.I saw somewhere, where it was said that there Last Of A Dying Breed release was there best one record sale wise since there Street Survivors release back in 1977 with the original line-up.That said, people just need to lighten up & just enjoy the music & enjoy life & stop living in the past.Leave history to the historians, & lets leave the music to the artist & the fans who love it.That said, Happy Holidays to you & yours.

@loaferman: Why dodn't the band Alabama get all this bull-shit? They had the CSA flag as their symbol too. The whole issue is nonsense really. It's not like Skynyrd used a Nazi Swastika at their shows. There were lots of bad everything, still are...one bad apple ruin the whole bunch. You guys should try to and find a middle ground here. Just accept each other's views and listen to a Ronnie Van Zant & Mules tune...smoke a peace pipe or sumpin'.

=Walk In My Shadow said:Celtic it's doubtful you older than me but no matter. Some white people funny about that war('it wasn't about slavery!') and some black folks too('white people invented slavery/what do you mean non-white people owned slaves in the USA?').

People believe what they want to believe, but you tell me with a straight face that, given the choice of no slaves and no war or keep your slaves and go to war, our people wouldn't have been better off with the first choice. AND that change should have been paid by every state in the Union for the betterment of all and to avoid killing the southern economy.

But the South didn't have leaders that wise, and it seems you are in the 21st Century, & still down in the mud and on the wrong side of history on this. May you and yours have a blessed Thanksgiving.

Ever heard of the Corwin Amendment? Lincoln himself sent all governors a letter encouraging it to be passed, it permitted the continuation of slavery in the states where it existed. This taken along with many of Lincoln's own quotes prove slavery has nothing to do with it, especially in light that the Confederate Constitution forbade any further slaves to be imported into the South. Stonewall Jackson himself had a religious school for black children and sent his pastor money from the battlefield faithfully to keep it operating.
Now having addressed history, as for Skynyrd they embraced the flag when it was financially viable, or was I dreaming watching the tribute concert video with the white piano covered in the flag with an eagle to honor to lost band members?
Funny thing they honored the deceased band very specifically using the flag. Why was that?
Skynyrd caught a backlash and went for a have it both ways solution, although they seem to hide the flag now based on videos I have seen, yet I see merchandise for sale in Walmart with the band logo in the flag. Guess it makes a buck so then it is OK?
The fact is the history of the band was to fly and support the flag and they changed when it seemed like it might cost them a dollar. Bands have an image, whether you go for the music or not. Who wants to see KISS without makeup and all the pyro? Whether they like it or not there is a large amount of Skynyrd fans who are flag supporters who felt let down by this decsion and the half step backtrack. Do we still love the music, sure. But I am not buying any items from anyone who used the flag then tried to denounce it or go to any concerts until the flag is back where it used to be.
Why was the flag used in a tribute to the fallen band members if it was not part of the band's lore?

@treblejunkie: Well said. Like I always say, I go to a Skynyrd show for the music & the love I have for those fellers N gals. They lost so many loved ones over the years. So I go for the music & the love of the band.Civil War & all that history stuff I would rather learn in school or read about. Never in my life, shall I mix that with a Skynyrd concert,Happy holidays to you & yours to.

@bipblake: Easy for a guy who lives in some helpless town in the bush north of Toronto, but you folks are hashing up ancient history. That War of Northern Aggression is a done deal. Neil Young wrote about SOME shit that DID happen with SOME folks in Alabama many years ago, not ALL folks in Alabama 50 years ago. Racism & bigotry is alive and well everywhere where there is humans. Folks just seem to use slavery as the reason the CSA deserved to lose the war in 1865. Those ignorant folks best take a college course in history, specifically slavery, and then come to a conclusion. Maybe learn BOTH sides of the story, or ALL sides of the story(s), then come to a conclusion, then let it be. Get on with today & tomorrow. Fuck yesterday, or it'll kill you. Happy hellidays fellow SkynHeads eh...YA'LL.

@Walk In My Shadow: I'm not in no mud. All I ever said was, & its never gonna change is, I go to concerts for the music. I don't go for a flag. Now if other people seem to have a problem with the flag, then the simple solution is to stay home then. No one is forcing em to go.And if they do go, then don't whine about a flag.As for the civil war, that was before my time & the bands time. And in both cases, neither should be penalized or scrutinized by the war or where it was they (the band) came from.Your allowed to be proud of where your from just as your allowed to have your roots & your tradition to.And if people wanna continue to live in the past, then I don't know what to tell em, other than to get a life & start living in the present. And that's about the best I can put it.And may you & yours be safe & have a blessed Holiday season to.

@celtic53: Well I thank ya for the kind words. Neil Young's from Canada if my memory is right, so what the hell does he know about the south anyways. lol And for the record, I'm with you. I'll take me a redhead green eyed fiery southeren belle any day of the week cos I just love there feisty temper. There fun to be with.As for the flag issue, I think people have beaten this thing to death & its just plain ridiculous. They need to stop living in the past.Hell I have more rebel flags than I can count.Am I a redneck? Your damn right I am. And I'm damn proud of it, & of my upbringing to.But at the same time, I have friends both black & white & the funny thing is, they don't seem to have a problem with the flag pertaining to Skynyrd and or music as a whole. I love those guys & have been to more shows than I care to count. And I always make it clear from the start, that my Rebel flags are for there music only.Where your from is where your from. Its called roots & tradition. And I'll be damn if I'm gonna hide my roots & tradition just for a few narrow minded silly bastards who have nothing better to do but to live in the past.To them & to the haters trying to use the flag, & or the Skynyrd music as a hate symbol or as a reason to hate, I say to those silly bastards, they can all kiss my ass.And when ya think about it, think of it this way. When all of us were born & I'm talking on the very day we came out our moms womb, did we as a baby have a choice as to where we came from on a map? The answer is HELL NO! So just because this band happened to come from the south, that's suppose to mean that there not allowed to be proud of where they came from? I'll be damned. It will be a cold day in hell before I let some runny nose silly little bastard piss on my damn picnic I can tell ya that. But like my pappy use to say, with folks like that, its like trying to teach a pig how to sing.It waste your damn time, & it annoys the hell out of the pig. Oh yea & Happy Thanksgiving to ya.to.
