I remember.... during the late '70's hearing 'Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd' for the first time... when all around me was John Travolta and The Bee Gees and disco and horrible things like that....It was a revelation...... I have a dvd of The Old Grey Whistle Test with a great version of Freebird on it....still a favorite...

I was under the impression that this band was no more as... sadly...some members were lost in a plane crash.......now I see they are playing in my town next year. I have bought a ticket. Will I see THE band? How many original members are there? Are they any good?

Please enlighten me...and help me re-capture my youth.....

There are many people on this forum better equipped to answer your question than i, but briefly, Gary Rossington is the only surviving original Since Billy Powell sadly passed away earlier this year. But the legacy goes on and on, With many long serving members of the band, like my own hero Rickey Medlocke on lead guitar. Michael Cartellone is the best + hardest working drummer i ever did see. And then there is the younger brother of Ronnie Van Zant(Johnny Van Zant)on vocals. They are not just "A Band" they are "THE BAND".
If you were lucky enough to get a ticket, Get ready for the best night of your life. Hope this helps.

Where you goin to see them anyway?

Just go see them, and all your doubts about about how many post77 members are still in the band, will melt like snow for the sun... You have to see it this way : all the original members ARE still in the band and in the hearts, and all the musicians who joined Skynyrd after the tragedies are all "the right man on the right place". They are not only chosen for their musical skills, 'cause Skynyrd is NOT "a seventies-band still touring to make some money". They still play the great songs Ronnie wrote, and they still write great songs together in the same spirit. Skynyrd is still ALIVE, enjoy your 2010-show !

They are the finest bunch of guys an girls ever to grace a stage and what with Gary Rickey & Sparky brandishing guitars it is a awesome experience . JVZ,s vocals fill the venue and always sound fantastic ,Peter on the keys plays the keyboard wonderfully ,Michael is just about the finest stick man i have heard and Mr Kearns does an outstanding job on the bass
